The Anna University Incubator with the support of Atal Innovation Mission has selected 24 startups with ideas ranging from electric super bikes to a social network for food enthusiasts to incubate.
The incubator received 90 applications from faculty members, students, alumni and the public. Of the 90, the incubator filtered 49 ideas before selecting 24 for pre-incubation. The focus areas are smart society, smart health, smart agriculture, education technology, future of wealth and other areas such as security and space.
The 10,000 sqft incubation facility offers sector specific labs, Fablab, pre-incubation space, incubation area, co-working area, a conference centre, spacious break out areas, an administrative office and a reception lounge.
Other startup ideas include innovative ideas such as locust smart repellant and artificial intelligence-based drones.
AIC - Anna University Incubation Foundation, a section 8 company founded by Anna University with the grant from Atal Innovation Mission, Niti Aayog, Government of India, conducted a virtual launch event on 12th of October 2020.
During the event, the foundation, which strives to provide innovation, incubation and startup services to budding entrepreneurs,
1. Announced partnership with Entrepreneurship Development and Innovation Institute (EDII), Government of Tamil Nadu
2. Launched entrepreneurship programs – ‘Aspire’ and ‘Inception’
3. Welcomed the first cohort of start-up co-founders into pre-incubation
Dr.L.Karunamoorthy, Registrar of Anna University, in his welcome address highlighted the guiding principles for the partnership with EDII, TN including facilitation of a strong start-up ecosystem, innovation capabilities, funding support, and also representation of start-ups in policy matters.
Launching the partnership Mr. S.Nagarajan(IAS), the director of EDII, TN and the chief guest for the event, elaborated on the role of Entrepreneurship Development and Innovation Institute and its initiatives such as Innovation Voucher Program(IVP), Tamil Nadu Student Innovator program(TNSI), etc. in Tamil Nadu.
Mr.S.Nagarjan(IAS) also launched Aspire and Inception programs of the Incubation Foundation during the event. While ‘Aspire’ is designed to motivate aspiring entrepreneurs, ‘Inception’ is for budding entrepreneurs with ideas to sharpen their idea pool into a business model.
Dr. M. K Surappa, Vice-Chancellor of Anna University welcomed the first cohort of start-up co-founders into pre-incubation program and mentioned vividly the necessity in today’s world to reinforce entrepreneurship capabilities. He encouraged researchers, students and faculty to pursue entrepreneurial dreams, while impressing upon the need for consistent research.
Highlighting the process of pre-incubation program, Mr.Kumar.S, CEO of the foundation, talked about the number of applications, evaluation criteria and the program structure.

Launching the Pre-incubation Program, Mr .S. Somasegar, Managing Director of Madrona Venture Group and Advisor of the Incubation foundation, highlighted the varied investment interests of the group.
Illustrating the goals of the Incubation foundation, Mr.Kumar.S, CEO of the foundation, talked about the key value proposition, structure of the foundation management and members of the incubation ecosystem.
AIC-Anna University Incubator announces partnership with MathWorks, a leading developer of mathematical computing software.
"MathWorks is excited to support the growth of early stage technology companies by offering one year of free access to our software tools to AIC-AU Incubation Foundation companies. MathWorks will make available an online portal through which your incubated startups/cohorts can register for free access.", says David Rich, Director Marketing, MathWorks.

This partnership comes into force with immediate effect and all the incubated startups could avail the benefits of this program.
